DALLAS (SMU) – No. 19 SMU suffered its first defeat of the season in a 2-1 decision against East Carolina at Washburne Stadium in the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

SMU's unbeaten streak to start the season ends at seven. It was the best unbeaten start to a season since 1995, when the Mustangs made it 24 matches en route to a 23-1-1 finish then ended in the College Cup semifinals.

Annabelle Abbot scored the game-winner for the Pirates in the 86th minute.

The Mustangs scored first when Julissa Cisneros tapped in a rebound in the 33rd minute. Mackenzie Rudden took the initial shot that was deflected back to Cisneros. It was the league-leading sixth goal of the season for Cisneros, who has been on the AAC Weekly Honor Roll each of the past two weeks.

Isabella Gutierrez evened the match in the 41st minute by hitting the lower right of the goal. ECU, who is receiving votes, is now 6-2-1 (1-0-0 AAC)

Courtney Sebazco had a team-leading six shots in the match for SMU (4-1-3, 0-1-0). The Hermann Trophy Watch List member had two on frame that were saved by ECU's Maeve English. Jewel Boland had four shots, including one that English barely managed to knock over the end line in the second half. The Mustangs had nine corner kicks to three for ECU and outshot the Pirates 15-5.

The Mustangs host Baylor at Washburne Stadium on Sunday at 7 p.m.
