DALLAS- SMU men's tennis clinched its first ranked victory Tuesday afternoon with a dominate 4-1 victory over No. 54 Old Dominion. Old Dominion came ready to battle but ultimately it did not matter as the Mustangs picked up the doubles point and three straight singles matches to earn the victory.
The Mustangs are now 7-0 at the Styslinger/ Altec Tennis Complex this season.
"Feels great to be back home. Being on the road for three consecutive weekends was certainly a challenge. Boys competed hard and did a great job in doubles," said head coach
Grant Chen. "PK and Adam really got us going in doubles and then to have a few different players get singles wins was super encouraging. Antonio has been playing solid tennis but hasn't gotten over the finish line. Louis played a great match as well."
The Mustangs picked up their 10
th doubles point of the season.
Adam Neff and
Pranav Kumar coasted to their fourth victory on Court 1 downing the No. 47 ITA doubles team of Younes Lalami and Brandon Perez, 6-1.
Liam Krall and
Antonio Muniz-Hidalgo picked up their seventh win of the season as they secured the doubles point with a 6-4 victory on Court 3.
Though up 1-0, Old Dominion continued to fight. Old Dominion picked up the first singles point with a straight set victory on Court 5.
SMU closed out Old Dominions hopes of a comeback with three straight singles victories clinching the match.
Antonio Muniz-Hidalgo put himself back in the win column with a 7-5, 6-1 victory on Court 4. Muniz-Hidalgo's result inched SMU back in the lead 2-1.
Pranav Kumar put SMU within one point of the match soon thereafter. He faced a tough battle in the first set although he won 7-5. The second set was all Kumar as he finished with a comfortable 6-2 victory clinching Court 3.
Louis Cloud had another energetic victory on Court 6. Cloud defeated Luca Maldoner 6-4, 6-4 for his third match-clincher of the season.
Adam Neff and
Liam Krall's matches were left unfinished on Courts 1 and 2. Both had split sets as Neff was on serve in the third and Krall was down a break.
"Really great week of opportunities and another one tomorrow as we face a very strong USD team," Chen said. "Thanks to Cracked Racquets for their impact in college tennis and covering today's match. They will also be covering the USD match as well."
The Mustangs are now 7-6 throughout the season heading into another ranked match up as they take on No. 37 San Diego tomorrow (Mar. 6) afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Styslinger/ Altec Tennis Complex.
