DALLAS (SMU)-- SMU volleyball and second-year head coach Sam Erger unveiled the conference portion of the 2023 schedule.
The 2023 American Athletic Conference regular season format includes 19 matches over 10 weeks with teams split into East and West divisions. The Mustangs will compete in the West division, playing two matches each against UNT, Rice, UTSA, Tulane, Tulsa and Wichita State. There will be one match with each opponent in the East Division: UAB, Charlotte, ECU, FAU, Memphis, South Florida and Temple.
The Mustangs' 11-match nonconference gauntlet features eight teams that made the NCAA Tournament in 2022, including three that won at least one tournament match and four who reached the Sweet 16. Five teams on the docket received votes or finished in the AVCA top-25 rankings.
From there, SMU jumps into conference play, hosting Memphis on Sept. 20 in Moody Coliseum. The first weekend conference series of the year features road matchups against UTSA (9/23-24) before returning home to host Wichita State (9/29 and 10/1).
Next, SMU hits the road back-to-back weekends. First, the Mustangs travel to Charlotte to face the 49ers on Oct.6, followed by a trip to Boca Raton to face FAU on Oct. 8. The next weekend SMU plays at Tulsa (10/13 and 10/14).
The Mustangs return home for a marquee home slate starting with matches against Rice on Oct. 20 and 21, followed by hosting UAB on Oct. 27, and South Florida on Oct. 29.
SMU will start November on the road, first with a trip to East Carolina on Nov. 3. Following a bye, the Mustangs will face Tulane in New Orleans on Nov. 10 and 12.
Winding down the regular season, North Texas visits Moody Coliseum for matches on Nov. 17 and 18.
The annual Red & Blue Scrimmage officially kicks off the 2023 season on Aug. 12, with an exhibition against TCU in Fort Worth to follow on Aug. 18.
