DALLAS  — SMU opened its 2024-25 season with a 96-62 victory over Tarleton State on Monday night at Moody Coliseum, marking the debut for head coach Andy Enfield. The Mustangs, who are now members of the ACC, used a dominant 32-3 run, including a 22-0 stretch, to pull away early. SMU's offense was firing on all cylinders, shooting 54 percent from the field while showcasing balanced scoring throughout the lineup.

Boopie Miller led the Mustangs with 21 points, including 10 in the first half, and contributed a career-high seven assists. He was one of six SMU players to score in double figures. Chuck Harris added 16 points and five assists, while Kario Oquendo chipped in 16 points and tied a career-high with four steals. The Mustangs' defense was equally impressive, forcing 23 turnovers, including 13 steals, and converting those turnovers into 30 points.

SMU's early defensive pressure set the tone, as they held Tarleton State to just 1-of-8 shooting during their 22-0 run. The Mustangs' depth was on full display, with junior guard B.J. Edwards contributing a career-high 13 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Yohan Traore, a junior forward, added 10 points and six rebounds, anchoring the frontcourt. The Mustangs dominated in the paint, outscoring Tarleton State 38-12 in that area, and continued to push the pace, recording 28 fastbreak points compared to the Texans' 11.

With SMU holding a commanding 51-28 lead at halftime, the second half was more of the same. The Mustangs stretched their advantage to as much as 33 points, with a 10-0 run early in the second period putting the game further out of reach. SMU finished the game with 20 assists, including a game-high seven from Miller, and dominated the boards, outrebounding the Texans 44-33.

The Mustangs will look to build on this performance when they host Florida A&M on Thursday night.

  • SMU Athletics is continuing work through the NCAA on Samet YiÄŸitoÄŸlu's eligibility. While he continues to practice with our team, until he is cleared to play, he is unable to participate in games.
