Mustangs Shoot Record-Setting Round To Move Up Leaderboard At NCAA Regional

STANFORD, Calif. (SMU) - SMU men's golf jumped four spots on the leaderboard into fifth place with a record-setting round on day two of three at the NCAA Regional from Stanford Golf Course.

In the 14-team field the top five teams after three days of play advance to the NCAA Championship. The Mustangs came into the day in ninth place, 14 spots out of an advancing position. SMU started the day strong quickly cutting the lead down in the front nine. On the back nine, SMU went on a tear with a 10-under score. They finished the round at 265, the lowest round score in SMU history. The 15-under score was third lowest in program history vs. par. SMU climbed all the way to fifth place with the round and have a three-stroke cushion on the sixth place Stanford for the last advancing position.
 
 
Zachary Kingsland shot the third lowest score in program history with a 63. Kingsland started the day with a one-under 34 on the front nine before taking off on the back nine. He shot 29 on the final nine holes with four birdies, an eagle and no bogeys. Kingsland was the biggest mover in the field jumping 39 spots into a tie for 14th.
 
J. Holland Humphries was the second biggest mover in the field with a 33 spot jump on the leaderboard. Humphries shot six-under 64 in his round to move into a tie for 20th. The Austin, Texas native made the most of the par fives, birdieing each on his round. He sits at three under for the tournament.
 
Chaz Aurilia moved up 11 spots with a two-under performance. The graduate senior's 68 moved him into a tie for 25th after a 71 on day one.
 
Matthew Foster and Will Sides are each tied for 40th on the leaderboard. Foster shot even par on the round including two-under on the front nine. Sides eagled the par five, 539 yard No. 7 hole to highlight his day.
 
The Mustangs will look to maintain a spot in the top five on Wednesday to advance to their 23rd NCAA Championship and first since 2021.
