SMU kicker Collin Rogers set a single-game record, tied a career record and set a new career long in Friday night's loss to BYU.
The junior from Prattville, Ark. delivered on all five of his field goal attempts in the 18-15 setback.Â
Rogers came to SMU as the No. 4 ranked kicker in the 2022 class. He was 16-of-20 as a true freshman, 20-of-27 last season and has gotten off to an 8-of-9 start this season to make him 44-of-56 for his career.
"I thought he really started kicking the ball well the second half of last year and even in the conference championship game which led him to being an all-conference kicker," SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee said. "I think his only miss of the year is over 50 right now. He's kicked the ball really well the first three games."
He struggled with some inconsistency early in the 2023 season, starting just 2-of-5. But Rogers finished the regular season 10-for-11 and made four field goals in the American Athletic Conference championship game victory.
"He was five-for-five. He was great (Friday)," Lashlee said. "He's always had a big leg. Hopefully tonight gives him confidence that through the next nine-plus games he'll continue to be pretty consistent for us."
Consistency was the focus for Rogers this offseason. He knew he wasn't locked in to start last season, so he worked to start this season strong.Â
"I wasn't all the way locked in originally. I think that's good that I can overcome that adversity to start, I think it was like 1-for-4 or something like that, 2-for-4, maybe, but not very good," Rogers said back on Aug. 1. "And to overcome that and have resilience, I think that's building, that's maturing. I think that I'm at that level to where now I can have a great season and just stay consistent all the time."
Rogers was responsible for 12-straight points, including all nine scored in the second quarter. He hit his first two from 53 and 52 yards to become the first kicker since Thomas Morstead in 2007 to make multiple tries from 50-plus yards. The 53-yard make gave him a new career long, surpassing his previous best by 2 yards.
His third, from 38 yards out, gave SMU the 9-7 lead at halftime. Rogers then delivered a 28-yard field goal to put the Mustangs up 12-7 in the third quarter.
After BYU regained the lead it was a 45-yard field goal from Rogers that pulled the game even at 15-all with 6:17 left to play.
"He was great. He hit five field goals," Lashlee said. "Two of them were 50, I believe, especially in the first half which was kind of into the wind the way it was in pregame. The last game, it was clutch. We had to have it to tie the game and give ourself a chance and he made it. Really proud of him."
But the Cougars got a field goal of their own with 1:58 remaining and Rogers was not given another chance as SMU went four-and-out.
"Collin was balling," SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings said. "What, he made two 50 yarders today, two 50-plus yarders today. If we can get the ball inside of there we know he's automatic from right there."
The five field goals breaks a record that Rogers tied in the American Athletic Conference championship game at Tulane last season. He also tied the career record, joining Eddie Garcia (1978-81) and Chase Hover (2011-13) with 44 makes.Â
There are things the SMU offense needs to clean up following three games during the open week. But having the safety net and weapon of Rogers is something that could be the difference between a win and a loss later this season.
"Even when you are moving the ball and scoring touchdowns and doing the things that we need to do better, you're going to have clutch kicks you need in games to win," Lashlee said. "It was good for him to get that confidence tonight. He's, so far, proven to be a very consistent guy for us."
