Mustangs Drop ACC Match Against No. 23 North Carolina

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU Women's soccer program fell 2-0 to No.23 North Carolina on Friday in the team's regular-season home finale.

In front of over 2,000 fans, SMU (8-6-2, 2-4-2 ACC) fought hard in front of its home crowd and was able to generate quality looks against the Tar Heels, especially in the second half, but was unable to find the back of the net on any of the team's nine shots.

The defending national champions, North Carolina (10-5-0, 4-3-0 ACC), jumped out to an early lead behind two goals from the Tar Heels' Caitlin Mara.

After a brief feeling-out period, UNC scored the game's opening goal in the 11th minute on a corner kick set piece.  The Tar Heels kept applying pressure and minutes later had another opportunity to increase the lead, but SMU defender Sydney Japic delivered a team save, standing tall in front of the net.

However, UNC would score its second goal of the game off the foot of Mara once again in the 19th minute.

The Mustangs kept battling, as Lydia Ungashick sent a shot just wide in the 21st minute and in the 32nd minute, Liz Eddy had SMU's best chance to score in the half as she had a header batted away by the Tar Heels' goalkeeper.

UNC held a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

Eddy led SMU's offensive charge in the second half and sent a bending ball on goal in the 51st minute, but it was straight into the hands of UNC's goalkeeper.

SMU kept fighting to get back into the game, as Nicholson, who led the Mustangs in shots, had two good looks miss down the stretch.

Both teams took turns trading shots, but UNC scored its third goal of the game on a penalty kick in the 79th minute to reach the game's final score.

The Mustangs are now 6-3-1 inside Washburne this season. SMU goalkeeper Aubrey Brown finished the game with three saves.
