Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Mustangs Drop Road Match To No. 2 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. (SMU) – The SMU women's soccer program fell 5-1 on the road to No.2 Stanford on Saturday.

Taking on arguably the best offensive team in the nation, SMU (8-7-2, 2-5-2 ACC) held its own in the first half of the game, before Stanford (14-1-1, 8-0-1 ACC), who entered the game No.5 in the RPI ranking, took control of the game and scored four second-half goals to reach the match's final score.

The Mustangs rattled off 10 shots in the match and are only the third team this season to record double-digit shots against the Cardinal.

Palo Alto, California native, Sydney Japic, who grew up several blocks away from the Stanford campus, scored SMU's only goal of the match in the 82nd minute off a corner kick feed from Paxton Bock. It was Japic's second goal of the season.

SMU goalkeeper Aubrey Brown recorded a career-high 11 saves on 27 shots faced (16 on goal). Her 11 saves are the most in a single game by a Mustang since Shannon Moroney had 11 against UConn on October 25, 2015.

The Mustangs started the match off strong, firing off three that just sailed over the crossbar over the first couple of minutes.

The SMU defense stood tall in the first half, holding Stanford to just nine shots. The Cardinal scored the first goal of the game in the 41st minute and led 1-0 at the half.
Coming out of the break Stanford pushed its intensity on the attack scoring four straight goals in the half.

SMU had a golden opportunity to score in the 80th minute as three Mustangs got a shot on goal in a scrum in front of the net, but three acrobatic saves in a row from the Stanford goalkeeper denied the Mustangs. The final shot in the sequence resulted in a corner kick for the SMU that resulted in Japic's goal.
