LOUISVILLE, Ky. (SMU) – The SMU women's soccer program fell 3-0 to No. 21 Louisville on the road Thursday, in the team's regular-season finale.
SMU (8-8-2, 2-6-2 ACC) gave Louisville (13-3-2, 6-2-2) everything they had, generating numerous quality looks, but was unable to find the back of the net. The Mustangs held the Cardinals, who entered the match third in the ACC in goals scored, scoreless in the first half.
Liz Eddy led the charge on offense, tallying a team-high five shots with two on goal for the Mustangs. Towards the end of the first, Eddy sent a rocket on goal that forced the Louisville goalkeeper to make a diving save to keep the game even.
After the scoreless first half, the Cardinal netted their first goal of the night in the 52nd minute. The Mustangs kept fighting and drew a yellow card on the Louisville side of the pitch, but could not capitalize on the free kick opportunity.
Louisville scored once again in the 64th minute as SMU continued trying to answer. A shot by Eddy that was saved, and a run into the box by
Lindsay Nicholson that was called offside, demonstrated the Mustangs' ability to never quit.
The Cardinal added one more goal in the 71st minute to reach the game's final score.
With time winding down,
Lydia Ungashick and Nicholson sent shots at goal but to no avail.
SMU goalkeeper
Aubrey Brown finished the game with six saves on 18 shots faced.
With Louisville entering the ranked No.21, it marked SMU's fourth straight match against a nationally ranked opponent.
