LUBBOCK, Texas (SMU) – The SMU women's basketball program fought hard on the road but fell 91-60 to Texas Tech on Thursday inside United Supermarkets Arena.
SMU (1-2, 0-0 ACC) made a season high of 11 three pointers as four Mustangs reached double figures, including
Tyi Skinner, who led the team with 15 points in her season debut. Texas Tech (4-0, 0-0 Big 12) used home court to its advantage and jumped out early and was able to keep the Mustangs at arm's length for the majority of the game.
SMU was 11-33 from beyond the arc and had 36 points scored off the bench. The 33 three-pointer attempts are tied for the second most in program history. It was SMU's second game this season, recording 10 or more made three pointers.
Texas Tech shot 54% from the floor and knocked down nine three-pointers themselves. TTU was also 20-25 from the line. Bailey Maupin (26) and Jalynn Bristow (20) led the way for the Lady Raiders.
Skinner finished with 15 points, scoring 13 of her 15 in the first half. She was 3-of-8 from beyond the arc and 4-of-5 from the line. It was her 89
th career game scoring in double figures.
Zahra King made a career-high three three-pointers (3-6) and finished with 11 points. Also chiming in 11 was
Ayanna Thompson, who was also 3-5 from beyond the arc.
Kyla Deck ended her night with 10 points and three steals; she has had at least three steals in every game this season. Skinner and Thompson also had three steals.
Tech jumped out to the early lead on a four-point play that sparked an 8-0 for the Lady Raiders. After a three-pointer from
Ayanna Thompson ended the run and got SMU on the board. TTU went on another 9-0 run and led 30-12 at the end of the first. Tyi Sknner had seven of her 13 points in the first quarter to keep the Mustangs in the game.
The second quarter has been SMU's best scoring quarter of the season, and that proved true once again as the Mustangs began the second quarter on an 8-0 run and cut the lead to 10. However, Tech answered once again with an 8-0 run of their own. Skinner led the Mustangs with six in the quarter as SMU outscored Texas Tech 17-16.
King led the Mustangs out of the half by hitting another three-pointer. Deck caught fire in the third scoring eight points, but a 16-3 run from Tech continued to grow the Red Raider Lead.
Thompson and King scored six and five points, respectively, in the fourth quarter, and SMU matched Texas Tech's 18 points in the period and the game reached its final score.
