SMU Wins Battle Over Butler, 87-85

SMU hosts UAPB at Moody Coliseum on Tuesday. This is the fifth game of a seven-game homestand to open the season. The Mustangs improved to 4-0 with an 87-85 win over Butler at Moody Coliseum on Saturday. Jaron Pierre Jr. scored the game-winner with 4.2 seconds left in the victory over the Bulldogs.

Five Mustangs scored in double figures in the win over Butler with Boopie Miller recording team highs of 23 points, 12 assists (tied career high) and three steals. Jaron Pierre Jr. finished with 18 points, including the game-winner, and a team-high seven rebounds. The Mustangs outscored Butler 62-30 in the paint, the most points in the paint for SMU under Head Coach Andy Enfield.

Through four games, SMU has five players averaging double figures in scoring: Boopie Miller (21.3, 7th ACC), Jaron Pierre Jr. (17.5, 15th ACC), B.J. Edwards (15.0, 24th ACC), Corey Washington (13.5, 38th ACC) and Samet Yigitoglu (12.3, 44th ACC). Yigitoglu is leading the Mustangs in blocks (1.5, 11th ACC) and rebounds (8.0, 11th ACC). Boopie Miller has the team lead in assists (7.3, 2nd ACC, 13th NCAA) with a 2.64 assist-to-turnover ratio (15th ACC). SMU is shooting 48.6% overall and holding opponents to 41.3%.

ACC PRESEASON POLL & HONORS: Senior guard Boopie Miller was selected preseason All-ACC Second Team and the Mustangs were picked sixth in the vote by a select media panel. Miller received the highest vote total of any member of the preseason All-ACC Second Team (27). The teams picked in front of the Mustangs were [5/4] Duke, [6/6] Louisville, [18/19] North Carolina, [25/rv] NC State and [rv/rv] Virginia. Miller was All-ACC Third Team last season after averaging 13.2 points (26th ACC), 5.5 assists (4th ACC, 33rd NCAA), 2.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals (9th ACC) with a 2.50 assist-to-turnover ratio (2nd ACC, 41st NCAA). He also had a pair of game-winning shots, including a right-wing 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left in a 54-52 win at Virginia. He was the Acrisure Holiday Invitational MVP after SMU defeated Washington State in the championship.

RETURNING STARTERS: The Mustangs return senior guards Boopie Miller and B.J. Edwards and sophomore center Samet Yiğitoğlu. Miller was All-ACC Third Team last season after averaging 13.2 points (26th ACC), 5.5 assists (4th ACC, 33rd NCAA), 2.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals (9th ACC) with a 2.50 assist-to-turnover ratio (2nd ACC, 41st NCAA). Edwards was ACC All-Defensive Team while averaging 9.9 points (52nd ACC), 4.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists (10th ACC) and 2.4 steals (2nd ACC, 11th NCAA) with a 2.02 assist-to-turnover ratio (10th ACC). Edwards had an SMU-record 83 steals. Yiğitoğlu returns after averaging 10.0 points (51st ACC), 6.2 rebounds (17th ACC) and 1.0 blocks (15th ACC) while shooting 53.5% from the field.

NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE: The Mustangs have nine non-conference home games, including a home game with Butler on Nov. 15 (W, 87-85). SMU also faces four SEC teams beginning with a visit to [rv/rv] Mississippi State on Nov. 28 and then [rv/24] Vanderbilt in the ACC/SEC Challenge on Dec. 3. Texas A&M is next in the Hoop Hype XL matchup at the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas on Dec. 7 followed by the Compete 4 Cause Classic versus LSU in New Orleans on Dec. 13.

ANDY ENFIELD IN YEAR TWO: The Mustangs have three returning starters and the nation's fourth-ranked high school recruiting class, which is the best in program history. Last season, the Mustangs went 24-11 overall and earned a No. 1 seed in the NIT. SMU finished 13-7 in the program's inaugural season in the ACC to tie for fourth, recording a 7-3 road record in league play. The Mustangs also won the Acrisure Holiday Invitational.

2024-25 RANKINGS: SMU averaged 79.9 points (3rd ACC, 39th NCAA) while shooting 47.8% (2nd ACC, 32nd NCAA) overall and 37.8% on threes (2nd ACC, 21st NCAA). The Mustangs also led the ACC in steals (8.1, 55th NCAA) and total rebounds (38.4, 31st NCAA). SMU finished third in the ACC in fastbreak points (12.7, 48th NCAA), second in rebound margin (+5.5, 23rd NCAA), second in offensive rebounds (12.5, 48th NCAA), second in assists (15.9, 44th NCAA), second in bench points (24.0, 72nd NCAA), fourth in scoring margin (+8.6, 42nd NCAA) and third in field-goal defense (41.3%, 47th NCAA). SMU was one of eight teams in the top 50 nationally in field-goal percentage and field-goal defense (Auburn, Bradley, Central Conn. St., Duke, Liberty, McNeese, Yale).

Boopie Miller averaged 13.2 points (26th ACC), 5.5 assists (4th ACC, 33rd NCAA) and 1.6 steals (9th ACC) with a 2.50 assist-to-turnover ratio (2nd ACC, 41st NCAA). Chuck Harris was next in scoring at 12.9 (29th ACC) while hitting 41.5% from three. B.J. Edwards averaged 9.9 points (52nd ACC), 3.7 assists (10th ACC) and 2.4 steals (2nd ACC, 11th NCAA) with a 2.02 assist-to-turnover ratio (10th ACC). Matt Cross had six double-doubles (8th ACC) and led the Mustangs in rebounding (7.6, 6th ACC) while adding 11.8 points (38th ACC). The Mustangs were one of two teams with six scoring at least 9.9 per game (Ole Miss) with Kario Oquendo (11.2, 46th ACC) and Samet Yiğitoğlu (10.0, 51st ACC). Yiğitoğlu was second for SMU in rebounds (6.2, 17th ACC) and double-doubles (3, 21st ACC) while leading the Mustangs in blocked shots (1.0, 15th ACC). 

2024-25 ACC AWARDS: Boopie Miller was named All-ACC Third Team and B.J. Edwards was selected to the ACC All-Defensive Team. Edwards also received votes for Most Improved Player and Kario Oquendo received votes for Sixth Man of the Year.

LAST GAME (W 87-85 vs Butler on Nov. 15): DALLAS (AP) — Boopie Miller scored 23 points and Jaron Pierre Jr.'s reverse layup with four seconds left carried SMU to an 89-87 win over Butler on Saturday. Finley Bizjack missed a deep 3-point attempt that bounced hard off the back of the rim as time expired. Miller shot 9 of 13 and distributed 12 assists overcoming seven turnovers. Pierre scored 18 points, B.J. Edwards and Samet Yigitoglu each scored 14 and the Mustangs (4-0) shot 56% (36 of 64) despite a 31% effort (4 of 13) from 3-point range. Bizjack scored 18 points and Michael Ajayi 14 for Butler (3-1). Edwards' layup with 4:45 left gave SMU an 80-70 lead before Butler outscored the Mustangs 15-5 and tied it at 85 on a 3 from Ajayi with 37 seconds to go. SMU's game-winning possession was a frenetic one in which Pierre missed a straight-away 3, Edwards collided with a teammate to secure the offensive rebound, then looking for an open teammate found Pierre who beat a Butler defender on the baseline for the up-and-under basket.

THE SERIES VS UAPB (6-1 on court, 5-1 official): SMU most recently claimed a 72-37 decision on Nov. 18, 2017 in Dallas. The only meeting away from Dallas came in Tulsa, Okla., at the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off, where SMU knocked off Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 64-55.

LAST TIME VS UAPB (W, [rv/rv] 72-37 on Nov. 18, 2017): DALLAS -- On Saturday night, SMU easily disposed of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 72-37. Shake Milton is a national player of the year candidate and has played like it to this point, scoring 17. Senior Ben Emelogu II had 13 points and 10 rebounds while hitting 3-7 from three. Jarrey Foster continued his steady play with seven poi9nts and five rebounds. Transfer Jimmy Whitt stuffed the boxscore with 12 points, six rebounds and six assists. Everett Ray also recorded a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Mustangs finished with 24 assists on 25 field goals.

ACTIVE CAREER LEADERS: Four Mustangs are ranked among the top 100 among active players in NCAA Division I. Jaron Pierre Jr. is 5th in career points (1,659), 52nd in scoring average (13.6), 10th in threes made (253) and 16th in games (122). Boopie Miller is 15th in points (1,467), 33rd in scoring average (14.5), 7th in assists (468), 22nd in assists average (4.63), 29th in steals (139), 19th in FT% (82.3) and 16th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.79). B.J. Edwards is 61st in steals (121). Corey Washington is 109th in points (1,124), 111th in scoring average (12.2), 40th in rebounds (588), 36th in FT% (72.0) and 35th in double-doubles (14).

ASSISTS: Boopie Miller is averaging 7.3 assists (2nd ACC, 13th NCAA). Last season, SMU was second in the ACC in assists at 15.9 (44th NCAA). Boopie Miller averaged 5.5 (4th ACC, 33rd NCAA). B.J. Edwards was next for the Mustangs at 3.7 (10th ACC). 

ASSISTS 2.0: Boopie Miller has a 2.52 assist-to-turnover ratio in his career at SMU and B.J. Edwards has a 2.16 assist-to-turnover ratio in his time on the Hilltop. Both rank among the top 10 for those averaging at least 3.0 assists per game. Boopie Miller has 11 assists and one turnover through two games (11.00 ast/to, 2nd ACC, 5th NCAA). In 2024-25, Boopie Miller was at 2.50 (2nd ACC, 41st NCAA) and B.J. Edwards at 2.02 (10th ACC).

BALANCING ACT: SMU had five score in double figures three times this season (3-0). In 2024-25, the Mustangs had at least five players in double figures in 13 games (12-1), at least six with 10+ four times (4-0) and seven at 10+ twice (2-0). Last season, sophomore center Samet Yiğitoğlu averaged 10.0 points (51st ACC), 6.2 rebounds (17th ACC), 2.4 offensive rebounds (12th ACC) and 1.0 blocks (15th ACC) while shooting 53.5% from the field and recording three double-doubles (21st ACC).

CENTURY MARK: SMU has scored at least 100 points six times under Head Coach Andy Enfield (plus 96 2x, a 97 and a 98). The five 100-point games in 2024-25 were the most since the 1992-93 season (6 times). The Mustangs' 117-74 win at Miami 1/18/25 set program records for points in a road game (was 112 at Arkansas 2/13/1971) and points in a league game (was 116 vs TCU 1/5/1977). The 117 points tied for sixth-highest in program history and was the most in an ACC game since Wake Forest scored 119 in 3OT at North Carolina in 2003 and the most in an ACC game in regulation since 1983 (130 by NC State at Wake Forest).

To raise awareness and bring attention to the cause during this week, we are asking coaches to return to suiting up during their games – and of course, wear their most eye-catching sneakers. The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. This initiative leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs. Since 1993, coaches have raised over $179 million for the American Cancer Society.

GRAND ACHIEVEMENT: Jaron Pierre Jr. lead the Mustangs with 1,659 career points, followed by Boopie Miller with 1,467 career points. Corey Washington is next with 1,124.

HALF A HUNDRED: SMU scored 53 in the second half against Murray State after tallying 48 in each half of the season opening 96-76 win over Tarleton State. The Mustangs scored at least 50 in a half 13 times in 2024-25, going 10-0 in those games (high was 60 in the 1st half at Miami 1/18).

INAUGURAL ACC SEASON IN 2024-25 (13-7): SMU finished tied for fourth in its inaugural ACC season at 13-7. The Mustangs went 6-4 at Moody Coliseum and 7-3 on the road.

MEN OF STEALS: SMU is averaging 8.0 steals this season with eight different Mustangs claiming at least one. Last season, SMU led the ACC at 8.1 (55th NCAA). B.J.
