OKLAHOMA CITY (Paycom Jim Thorpe Award/SMU) – SMU safety
Ahmaad Moses has been named Paycom Jim Thorpe Award National Defensive Back of the Week, announced the foundation on Tuesday.
Moses filled the stat sheet with 15 tackles, two tackles for loss, and two interceptions, earning the ACC's Defensive Back of the Week honor for the second time this season. His first interception in the second quarter set up the Mustangs' first touchdown of the game, while his second, a clutch overtime pick near the goal line, paved the way for SMU's game-winning score. Moses's relentless play and leadership anchored a statement win for the Mustangs' defense.
Nationally, Moses is tied for first in total interceptions with five. The Texas native leads the conference in interceptions per game (0.56), good for fifth in FBS. Moses is a vital part of the SMU defense that is ranked first in the nation in turnovers gained (22), fourth in passes intercepted (14) and fourth in red zone defense (0.647), all conference-leading marks.
Also for his defensive play against Miami, the former Mansfield Summit standout was also selected as the Walter Camp Award National Defensive Player of the Week, Senior Bowl Stock Up Defensive Player of the Week and the ACC Defensive Back of the Week earlier on Monday.
At the start of the season, the safety was selected as the ACC Defensive Back of the Week after his performance against East Texas A&M on Sept. 2 when he caught an interception and took it 95 yards to score a touchdown. Prior to the start of the season, Moses was named to the Phil Steele Preseason All-ACC Second Team, the Athlon Sports Preseason All-ACC First Team, the Panini Senior Bowl Top 300 List and the East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 List.
