No. 10 Mustangs Down Virginia Tech on Senior Day

DALLAS (SMU) – No. 10 SMU volleyball defeated Virginia Tech (10-15, 2-12 ACC) Sunday afternoon in straight sets (25-16, 25-13, 25-14) at Moody Coliseum. 

The win marks SMU's 10th sweep of the season and boosted the Mustangs' record to 19-5, 11-3 in league matches. 

Seniors Malaya Jones, Casey Batenhorst, Averi Carlson, Jentry Lamirand, Jordyn Schilling and Madison Scheer were honored post-match in the program's annual senior ceremony. 

Malaya Jones led SMU with 17 kills, hitting .739, her second-highest efficiency of the season. She also led the Mustangs with nine digs in the effort. Averi Carlson logged 33 assists and seven digs. 

Christa Wilburn tied the program's freshman ace record of 38 by Kendall Patterson in 2016. Wilburn ended the match with four aces, all of which came in the second set. 

As a team, SMU logged its best hitting percentage of the season, swinging at a .474 clip against the Hokies. SMU finished with only five attack errors in the three-set victory. The Mustangs also added nine aces and nine blocks. 

MATCH NOTES: 
  • The last time SMU hit over .400 was in the program's first ACC match, against No. 13 Georgia Tech (.400) on Sept. 9, 2024. 
  • SMU hit over .300 for the 13th match this season, ninth in ACC play.
  • Malaya Jones reached double-digit kills for the 19th time this season, 12th in conference matches. 
  • The Mustangs are 10-1 at Moody Coliseum this season. 
  • SMU leads the all-time series over Virginia Tech 3-1.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: 
Malaya Jones paced SMU's offense in the first set with eight kills on nine swings as the Mustangs earned a 25-16 victory. The Hokies were unable to slow down SMU's attack as it hit .462 in the opening set.

SMU used a 10-0 run in the second set to win the frame, aided by its command at the net with four blocks. The Mustangs held the Hokies to a .148 hitting percentage in the second set. SMU added five aces as well, four from freshman Christa Wilburn in the second set alone. Kennedi Rogers and Jones each notched five kills in the 25-13 set-two win, the most dominant set of the match. 

The Mustangs completed the sweep with a 25-14 set three decision. SMU's offense kept humming, hitting a match-high .464 while holding Virginia Tech to its lowest hitting percentage of the match at a .107 clip. SMU also added four more blocks to their match total of nine.
