Dr. John Haley ’64 Named 2025 Silver Anniversary Mustang Honoree

Haley ‘64 Will Be Honored At Halftime Of The Men's Basketball Game On Feb. 10 Versus Notre Dame

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU Lettermen's Association's Board of Directors and its Silver Anniversary Mustang (SAM) Award Committee will honor Dr. John Haley '64 as the recipient of the 2025 SAM Award on Saturday, February 10, at halftime of the SMU men's basketball game against Notre Dame. He was a swimmer from 1960-64, helping the Mustangs win four straight Southwest Conference championships.

Haley has been the SMU Ophthalmology Physician since 1977 and served the American Academy of Ophthalmology since being appointed to the CPT Task Force in 1989. He has also served as the President of the Texas Ophthalmological Association (2017-18) and as Chief of Staff at Garland Community Hospital. He has been a Full Clinical Professor at the University of Texas Health and Science Center in Dallas since 1992 and has been voted one of the top doctors in the DFW Metroplex by "D" magazine. Haley served in the U.S. Navy for eight years, including three years as a Naval Flight Surgeon during the Vietnam conflict.

Each year, the SMU Lettermen's Association Board of Directors awards the SAM Award to a former letter winner at least 25 years removed from their time on campus. The recipient has brought honor to SMU, made contributions that have lasting and positive effects on his or her fellow citizens, and has been a model citizen in his or her community.
