LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (SMU) -- In the first day of the Atlantic Coast Conference, Mustang history has already been made. A new program record was produced by the distance medley relay team and the first SMU point is on the board for the Mustangs' first championship meet in the ACC.
The DMR relay made up of Leoni Mierswa, Kirin Chacchia, Emily Waller and Macey Hilton ran a time of 11:13.13 -- shattering the previous record by nearly 20 seconds.
Gabriella Ayiteyfio put the first point on the board in the ACC for SMU with an eighth-place finish in the pentathlon. She scored 3,719 points – a season's best score. Ayiteyfio started the day off with a personal best in the 60-meter hurdles of 8.66, which puts her third-fastest in SMU history in the hurdle event. She had a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 11.81 meters. Ayiteyfio placed ninth in the high jump and 12th place in the long jump and 800.
"Gabby had a great day of being fully committed to the very end of the pentathlon and put points on the board for the team," Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said.
The Mustangs will be back in action tomorrow for Day Two of the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championship in Louisville.
