Mustangs Split Senior Day Doubleheader

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU Men's Tennis dropped a 4-2 battle against No. 10 California before grabbing a 7-0 victory over UT Dallas at Styslinger / Altec Tennis Complex on Sunday.
 
SMU took the early 2-0 lead after doubles and the first singles match against California, but the visitors came back and tied the match at 2-2 with wins on court six and court five. The Bears took the lead by winning court three before clinching the match in a three-set battle on court four.
 
Trevor Svajda earned his highest-ranked singles win in his collegiate career over California's No. 9 Carl Emil Overbeck (6-1, 6-1).
 
The Mustangs came back in the afternoon and won their match against UT Dallas 7-0. Seven senior Mustangs were honored during the senior day celebrations after doubles play of the match.
 
How it went vs. No. 10 Cal
SMU took the early lead in a close doubles battle. The no. 76-ranked SMU pair of Georgi Georgiev and Ofek Shimanov won a dominant 6-2 match against Cal's Carl Emil Overbeck and Alex Chang to grab the first win of the day.
 
Vikas Deo and Xavier Calvelo fell to the Bears' Mikey Wright and Lechno-Wasiutynski (6-3), but the Mustangs bounced back as Trevor Svajda and Louis Cloud (45) clinched the doubles point by defeating Cal's Theo Dean and Derrick Chen (6-3).
 
At the start of singles play, Svajda defeated No. 9-ranked Overbeck (6-1, 6-1) to make it 2-0 for the Mustangs. Svajda's win is his highest-ranked singles win in his collegiate career.
 
Calvelo dropped his match to Lechno-Wasiutynski (6-1, 6-3) on court six before Cal's Chen tied the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Cloud on court five.
 
The visitors took the 3-2 lead as No. 37-ranked Dean defeated Shimanov (7-6(5), 6-2) on court three.
 
Timofey Stepanov clinched the match for Cal with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Georgiev on court four.
 
How it went vs. UT Dallas
SMU took the doubles points as Barton and Maks Silagy won against Giritharan D and Eddy Shteyn (6-0) on court two of doubles, followed by No. 45-ranked Svajda and Cloud clinching the point with a 6-4 win against Benjamin Dubois / Travis Rafferty on court one.
 
In singles, Calvelo extended the lead for the Mustangs to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Shteyn. Deo grabbed another point for the Mustangs with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Matheus Zanelloto on court six.
 
Georgiev clinched the match at 4-0 for SMU on court two with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Giritharan D.
 
SMU and UT Dallas played out the remaining singles matches, and the Mustangs won all three matches.
