CARY, N.C. (SMU) – SMU Women's Tennis fell in their ACC Championships debut in the second round to No. 14 seed Wake Forest 4-2 in Cary, North Carolina, Wednesday afternoon. The Mustangs finished their first season in the ACC 12-14, 4-8 in conference matches.
 
Wake Forest won two of the three courts in doubles to take the doubles point. The Demon Deacons' court three pairing of Anna Zhang/Whitley Pate won 6-4 over Arianna Stavropoulos and Kayla Schefke to start. Then, Drew Morris and Ellie Pittman evened the score with a 6-4 win of their own on court two over No. 88 Nevena Carton/Kady Tannenbaum. The win for Morris and Pittman was the second straight win over a ranked opponent. No. 79 Makayla Mills/Krystal Blanch clinched the match for Wake Forest, defeating Sophie Llewellyn and Caroline McGinley 7-5.
 
In singles action, SMU climbed back in front with wins on courts two and four. Stavropoulos took down Pate from Wake Forest 6-0, 7-5. Then, Drew Morris collected a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) win over Blanch to give SMU a 2-1 lead. However, Wake Forest won the following three points to win the match 4-2. Tannenbaum got the best of Schefke 7-6 (7-0), 6-3 on court five, followed by a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 win by Wake Forest's No. 82-ranked Nevena Carton over Sophie Llewellyn on court one. The Demon Deacons clinched the match on court three as Anna Zhang won 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 over Ellie Pittman.
