Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Brown Scores 19 As Mustangs Fall At Home To Boston College

DALLAS (SMU) –  The SMU women's basketball program fell 77-59 at home to Boston College on Thursday.

In a wire-to-wire game heading into the fourth quarter, SMU (9-18, 2-13 ACC) was unable to complete its second-half comeback as Boston College (5-24, 1-15 ACC) outscored the Mustangs 22-9 in the final quarter for BC's first ACC win of the season.

Down five at the start of the fourth, the Mustangs cut the lead to one at the line with seven left in the game. Boston College increased its lead to seven after three straight baskets with five minutes to go. SMU cut to the lead four after an Ayana Brown three with just under five to go. A pair of free throws and a layup from BC pushed the lead to nine with just over two minutes left. A dagger three put the Eagles up by double-digits, who held on for the win.

The Mustangs shot 39% from the floor and knocked down nine three pointers but it was not enough to keep pace late with Boston College. The Eagles scored 18 points on turnovers and went 18-21 from the line in the game.

Anaya Brown led the Mustangs with 19 points and six rebounds. Brown shot 8-of-14 from the floor and went 3-of-5 from downtown. The forward also had two blocks while Grace Hall added three.

Hall led the Mustangs in rebounds with seven and had six points in addition to her three blocks. Ayanna Thompson also went 3-of-5 from downtown and had 13 points. Both Zahra King and Sahnya Jah each had nine points.

SMU opened the game on a 7-2 run, highlighted by a Brown three-pointer. BC responded with five straight points. Both teams traded buckets with neither team claiming an advantage early in the game. Thompson hit a three-pointer as the quarter ended to cut the BC lead to one. Brown had five points in the period as SMU trailed 16-15.

It was a slow start to the second quarter for both teams as Brown tried to spark the SMU offense. After BC led by six with four minutes left in the quarter, SMU tied the game in the final second after two free throws from Thompson. The Mustangs outscored BC 11-10 in the quarter as the game was tied at 26 heading into the half.

Brown led the Mustangs with eight points, shooting 2-of-3 from downtown in the half. SMU was 5-of-11 as a team from beyond the arc in the half.

SMU scored five straight points to start the third, but BC would answer with back-to-back threes to tie the game. Each team kept fighting to grab control of the game, as momentum swung in favor of BC after the Eagles hit another three-pointer. After extending the lead to five, SMU answered with a three-pointer from Thompson. King scored five points in the final minutes to keep the lead from growing too large as BC led heading into the fourth. SMU made four straight field goals to close the quarter as both teams' offense exploded in the period, scoring a combined 53 points (BC 29-24). Thompson had eight while King had five.

The game was SMU's play for Play4Kay game as the team wore their pink uniforms to show support for the fight against breast cancer.
