DALY CITY, Calif. (SMU) – Freshman Ben Steinmann eagled 18 to earn co-champion honors at the Desimone Invitational. As a team, the Mustangs finished in a tie for third.
 
Steinmann came into the final hole of the tournament trailing by one stroke for the individual title. He found himself in the greenside bunker for his third shot on the par five. The freshman calmly buried the shot to put himself in a winning position with his final round 71.  His competitor, Pongsapak Laopakdee of Arizona State finished up his birdie securing the co-champion status for Steinmann. With rounds of 67 and 65 on day one, Steinmann posted 13-under for the tournament. The 13-under final score gave Steinmann a top 10 lowest tournament score in program history.
 
The Mustangs finished in a tie for third at 18-under par. The team posted 12-under and eight-under par on the first day before a round of two-over in the final round. The Mustangs finished behind No. 9 Arizona State and No. 39 TCU. SMU was even with No. 4 Texas and bested No. 26 Arizona, No. 10 Pepperdine, No. 33 UCLA, No. 25 USC, No. 24 Utah, No. 27 Wake Forest and No. 32 Washington for an impressive performance.
 
Zachary Kingsland finished in a tie for 28^th with a 73 in the final round. He posted 70 in round one with an eagle and 71 in round two. One stroke back of Kingsland, Christian Clark shot a final round 73 to maintain his 33^rd placement on the leaderboard. Clark birdied three straight holes beginning one before the turn.
 
Will Sides finished one-over par with rounds of 67, 76 and 74. He birdied his final hole to move up into 38^th. Gabe Post finished in a tie for 56^th, eight spots up on the final day thanks to a 73 in the final round.
 
Next up, the Mustangs tee off at the Pauma Valley Invitational running Monday March 16 through Tuesday March 18.
