Bunton's Brace Highlights Mustangs 5-1 Win Over UIW

DALLAS (SMU) –  The SMU women's soccer program showcased its scoring ability, highlighted by Brooke Bunton's first-half brace, defeating Incarnate Word 5-1 inside Washburne Stadium on Sunday.

After a goal from the Cardinals, the Mustangs (2-1-1,0-0-0 ACC) took over the game and scored five unanswered goals to remain unbeaten at home this season.  SMU outshot UIW (3-1-0, 0-0-0 Southland) 17-10 as Bunton (2), Londynn Hagan, Zoe Parkhurst and Julianna Millin all scored goals for the Mustangs. Kamiya Beck led SMU in assists with two.

UIW jumped out to a quick lead in the third minute, but SMU would respond with back-to-back goals in the 16th and 27th minutes from Bunton. It was her first career brace and her second and third goal of the season.

Bunton tied the game after Beck beat a defender near the goal line before setting her up for a one-timer that couldn't have been placed better. Her second goal came on a feed from Hagan just outside the box as the UIW goalkeeper came up to play the ball, but Bunton beat her to the ball and popped it in to give SMU the lead.

SMU never took their foot off the gas pedal in the first half as the team outshot UIW 11-5 in the period. With all the momentum on their side, freshman Londynn Hagan extended the Mustangs' lead after sending a bullet of a shot into the back of the net right before halftime.

SMU led 3-1 at the break and showed no signs of slowing down. Fresh out of the break, Julianne Richter sent a looping cross into the box and connected with Zoe Parkhurst, who headed in her first goal of the season.

Capping off the night was Julianna Millin, who scored her first career goal in the 80th minute after bouncing off a defender and beating the UIW goalkeeper with a rocket shot to the upper left corner.

Despite allowing their first goal of the season at home, the Mustangs have now scored seven total goals at home this season.

  • SMU is now 1-0 all-time versus UIW.
  • The Mustangs are now 24-11-5 at home under Nelson.
