Mustangs Celebrate Senior Day with a 6-0 Shutout Win Over Idaho State

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's soccer program celebrated Senior Day with a 6-0 shutout as Brooke Bunton's hat trick highlighted the victory for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs (5-1-2, 0-0-0 ACC) closed out non-conference play with their fifth shutout of the season and are now unbeaten in their last seven games with the win over Idaho State (2-3-2, 0-0-0 Big Sky).

SMU dominated the game right from the start as Brooke Bunton scored twice in the first half to give SMU a 2-0 lead at the break before completing her hat-trick in the second half.

The Mustangs scored four goals in the second half as freshmen Londynn Hagan and Julianne Richter added one each, and senior Jessica Osborne highlighted Senior Day, scoring the game's final goal.

Bunton is now the first Mustang since 2023 to score a hat trick in a game and increased her season goal total to six. Richter was the Mustangs lead facilitator finishing with two assists. Bunton led SMU in shots with five as the Mustangs outshot the Bengals 18-5 in the game and 13-3 in the second half. SMU also held the advantage on corner kicks, 7-3.

After a brief feeling-out period, Brooke Bunton scored the back-to-back goals roughly 90 seconds apart, 13 minutes into the game, to give the Mustangs the lead. Kaia Elverum-Samuelsen and Kaylee Noble were credited with the assists on the first goal, while Richter set Bunton up on the second one.

Coming out of the half, Richter scored her second goal of the season in the 46th minute to extend SMU's lead. Richter has now scored in back-to-back games for the Mustangs.

Hagan joined the party in the 64th minute, netting a ball off a feed from Zoe Parkhurst and Noble. This was immediately followed by Bunton scoring her third goal of the night on a ball that slipped by the goal post.

Osborne put the finishing touches on the game, scoring in the 80th minute. A fitting way to end Senior Day.

Senior goalkeeper Aubrey Brown and Jessi Curry split time in net for the combined shutout victory.

SMU remained unbeaten at home (5-0-2) this season and have now outscored opponents 20-2 in Washburne this season. 

Ella DeMott, Osborne,  Brown and Curry were honored post-game for their dedication to the team.
 
 OTHER NOTES
  • SMU is now 1-0-0 all-time against Idaho State
  • The Mustangs are now 27-11-6 at home under Nelson.
  • It was the fifth shutout of the season for SMU.
  • It was the 28th shutout under Nelson.
  • Bunton's hat trick was the first by a Mustang since Nyah Rose did against SFA in 2023.
