Peruna
Peruna (Human Mascot) serves as one of the most recognizable spirit ambassadors of the university. This role focuses on bringing SMU spirit to life through game-day appearances, special events, and fan engagement. Students in this role represent SMU with high energy, personality, professionalism, and pride.
Live Peruna & Peruna Handlers
Peruna (Shetland Pony & Handlers): Peruna, SMU’s live black Shetland pony mascot, has been a symbol of Mustang spirit since 1932. A central part of game days and university events, Peruna leads traditions, energizes crowds, and represents the pride and history of SMU. A dedicated team of Peruna Handlers is responsible for Peruna’s daily care, training, and overall well-being, while also managing all appearances. From the field to community events, handlers ensure Peruna is represented safely and professionally at all times. SMU Costumed Peruna and Live Peruna & Peruna Handlers Appearance Requests
Bring one of SMU's most beloved traditions to your next event! Costumed Peruna and Live Peruna & Peruna Handlers are available for select appearances, including photo opportunities, meet and greets, and other approved event activities.
Appearance Fees
- Estimated Appearance Fee & Time Fees and appearance length vary based on event details and conditions.
- SMU Athletics Sponsors, University Departments, Student Organizations, Camps, Official Alumni & Mustang Club Events, Schools & Nonprofits: $250
- Private & Corporate Events on SMU Campus: $500
- Corporate & Off-Campus Private Events: $750
- Live Peruna & Peruna Handlers
- Live Peruna appearance fees are determined based on the needs and requirements of each event due to the unique transportation, staffing, location, and safety considerations associated with a live animal.
Appearance Guidelines
- Requests should be submitted at least three (3) weeks in advance.
- Requests may be submitted up to three (3) months in advance.
- Appearances are only available within the DFW area.
- Appearances are typically 30 minutes to one hour.
- Submitting a request does not guarantee an appearance. All requests are subject to approval and availability.
- Academic, athletic, practice, and University commitments take priority.
- Event hosts are responsible for providing a safe and respectful environment, appropriate parking and event access, and an on-site contact.
- Costumed Peruna requires a private changing and break area that is not a public restroom, as well as a secure area for personal belongings.
- Live Peruna appearances require appropriate trailer access, parking, loading and unloading access, and a safe appearance area.
- All guests and event personnel must follow the direction of the Peruna Handlers during Live Peruna appearances.
- Outdoor appearances are subject to weather, temperature, and safety conditions.
- The health, safety, and well-being of Live Peruna will always take priority. Additional event-specific requirements may be provided after a request is reviewed.
- SMU Spirit reserves the right to modify, shorten, relocate, or cancel an appearance due to University obligations, schedule changes, illness, emergencies, weather, safety concerns, or animal welfare concerns.
- Any marketing or promotional use of Costumed Peruna, Live Peruna, or SMU trademarks must receive appropriate approval prior to use.
Payment
- Once your appearance has been approved, you will be notified of the total amount due and provided with instructions on where to submit payment.
- Proof of payment/receipt must be provided to SMU Spirit prior to the appearance.
