This role focuses on bringing SMU spirit to life through game-day appearances, special events, and fan engagement. Students in this role represent SMU with high energy, personality, professionalism, and pride.
Peruna (Shetland Pony & Handlers): Peruna, SMU’s live black Shetland pony mascot, has been a symbol of Mustang spirit since 1932. A central part of game days and university events, Peruna leads traditions, energizes crowds, and represents the pride and history of SMU. A dedicated team of Peruna Handlers is responsible for Peruna’s daily care, training, and overall well-being, while also managing all appearances. From the field to community events, handlers ensure Peruna is represented safely and professionally at all times.
