Trey Haverty

Trey Haverty joined SMU's staff in January of 2018 and coaches the Mustang safeties.

In 2019, Haverty coached Rodney Clemons to second-team All-American Athletic Conference honors after ranking second in the league with four interceptions. The senior also had 78 tackles, including three for loss, nine break ups, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick. He earned invites to the Hula Bowl and Shrine Bowl. Clemons agreed to terms as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs following the 2020 NFL Draft.

After losing Clemons to graduation and Trevor Denbow to the linebacker position following 2019, Haverty led a young safety unit in 2020.

Haverty came to the Hilltop after spending a season as the defensive quality control coach, working with linebackers, at the University of Texas. In 2016, Haverty served as the Defensive Coordinator at Lamar.

Prior to working with the Cardinals, Haverty spent three seasons coaching at his alma mater, Texas Tech. He worked with safeties and was the special teams coordinator in 2013 and 2014, before making the move to outside linebackers in 2015. In his three seasons with the Red Raiders, the team made two bowl appearances.

During the 2011 and 2012 seasons, Haverty coached safeties and wide receivers at TCU, helping the Horned Frogs to two bowl berths and a transition to the Big 12. The stop was his second in Fort Worth after spending three seasons (2007-09) as a graduate assistant with the Horned Frog defense. In his final two seasons as a GA, TCU went 23-3, with the No. 1-ranked defense in the country, and earned a berth to the Fiesta Bowl.

In 2010, Haverty served as the Defensive Coordinator at Millsaps College.

Haverty began his coaching career in 2005 coaching wide receivers at Midlothian High School. In 2006, Haverty began his collegiate coaching career working with the receivers at Cisco Junior College.

A four-year letterwinner at Texas Tech, Haverty began his playing career as a walk-on and went on to lead the Big 12 in receptions as a senior and earn second-team All-America honors from Sports Illustrated and third-team honors from the Associated Press.

Haverty earned his bachelor's degree from Tech in 2004 before going on to complete his master's at TCU in 2009. He and wife Christy have two children, Tripp and Blakely.
