Eric Mobley is in his second season (2025-26) as an assistant coach at SMU and his eighth working with Head Coach Andy Enfield, including six seasons at USC.
In his first season on the Hilltop, he helped lead the Mustangs to a 24-11 overall record and earned a No. 1 seed in the NIT. The Mustangs went 13-7 in the program’s inaugural season in the ACC to tie for fourth and also won the Acrisure Holiday Invitational. The Mustangs were one of just two teams in the nation with six players averaging at least 9.9 points and one of just eight teams in the NCAA top 50 for field goal percentage and field goal defense. SMU signed the nation’s fourth-ranked high school recruiting class, which is the best in program history.
In his seven seasons with Enfield, the teams are 150-82 including 126-71 in six seasons at USC. The Trojans made three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a run to the 2021 Elite Eight. The Trojans had eight NBA Draft selections between 2018 and 2024. Mobley helped coach his sons Isaiah and Evan at USC, both of whom were NBA Draft picks. Evan was selected a 2024-25 NBA All-Star and named the 2024-25 NBA Defensive Player of the Year.
Mobley coached various AAU programs for 11 years before joining Enfield’s staff at USC, coaching the AAU Compton Magic 16-U team (2015-18) and owning the Triple Threat AAU youth basketball program (2007-18). He traveled with the Compton Magic to China put on coaching clinics and hosted player camps. Mobley also served as the head women’s basketball coach at Rancho Christian High in Temecula, California (2015-18).
Mobley played collegiately at the University of Portland from 1987-90, where he averaged 7.2 points and 5.6 rebounds as a starter in 1989-90. He then played a season at Cal Poly Pomona as the team captain.
He played professionally for teams in Portugal, Mexico, and Indonesia, as well as domestically in the World Basketball League and on the legendary Meadowlark Lemon’s Harlem All-Stars.
Mobley, originally from Georgia, moved to the San Diego area in the 1980s. He graduated from Helix High in La Mesa, California. In 1991 he graduated from Portland with a degree in Criminal Justice. He is also involved in various ministry works, feeding the homeless and the Salvation Army.
He is the proud father of sons Isaiah and Evan, both taken in the NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Isaiah was Drafted No. 49 in the 2022 NBA Draft and Evan was drafted No. 3 overall in 2021. Evan was an NBA All-Star in 2024-25 and named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year. He also served as foster parent for five years to teens who are now adults.
