Mark Mitchell is in his sixth season (2021-22) at SMU.
In his five seasons at SMU, the Mustangs have won The American regular season, the AAC Tournament, made the NCAA tournament and the NIT. The Mustangs have garnered an American Athletic Conference Player of the Year honor and an AAC Sixth Man of the Year award. SMU has a total of 11 All-AAC selections. The Mustangs have three players from that time in the NBA (Semi Ojeleye, Sterling Brown, Shake Milton) with several others playing professionally throughout the world.
Prior to SMU, Mitchell served as the director of strength and conditioning for the Stephen F. Austin men’s basketball team. Starting in August 2012, he served under head coach Brad Underwood for three years, accumulating an overall record of 89-14 with three NCAA tournament appearances and three Southland Conference regular season and tournament championships.
Before joining Stephen F. Austin, Mitchell served as a graduate assistant at Western Michigan. While at WMU, he served as the first assistant to head football strength and conditioning coach Nate Peoples, and was the head strength and conditioning coach for the men’s tennis team.
In 2010, Mitchell completed internships with the Ohio State football strength and conditioning staff (May 2010-Aug. 2010) and the Eastern Michigan sports performance staff (Jan. 2010- April 2010).
He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a Strength and Conditioning Certified Coach (SCCC) through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association. He also has a certification in Applied Functional Sciences (CAFS) from the Gray Institute of Applied Functional Science.
Mitchell was a three-year letter winning defensive back at Eastern Michigan, where he earned his bachelor’s of science in sports medicine with a specialization in exercise science in 2010. He then earned his master’s of arts in coaching sport performance from Western Michigan in 2012.
