Alex Walton joined the Mustangs as a volunteer assistant in January of 2020 and primarily works with the middle distance group.
In his first season on the HIlltop, the Mustangs produced 14 individual NCAA B cuts, and eight individuals posted 14 times on SMU's all-time top 10 performer lists. Two swimmers won conference championships, while three individual swimmers and four relays earned eight total all-conference honors. In the classroom SMU earned CSCAA Scholar All-America Team honors and seven swimmers were named to the SMU honor roll. Â

Prior to his time at SMU, Walton worked as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Missouri, primarily specializing with the IM group. While working with his former training group, Walton mentored Olympic Trial qualifiers. While there, he also worked as an assistant coach at Columbia Swim Club.

Outside of the pool, Walton worked as a supply and government affairs intern with MFA Oil and as an operations assistant with BalloonStormers managing aircraft crew members and marketing services to business and consumers.

Walton has also undertaken various volunteer opportunities with Swim Across America, Soap Box Derby and Great Circle Tutoring.

A member of the Mizzou men’s swimming and diving team (2015-19), Walton was a team captain and helped lead the Tigers to the third highest SEC team scoring performance in history. Walton ranks top-ten all-time at Mizzou in the 400 IM (2nd), 200 IM (4th) and 200 back (6th) and was a U.S. Olympic Team Trial qualifier in 2016. He was also a member of the SEC Honor Roll.

Walton graduated from Mizzou in December of 2019 with a degree in agricultural systems management and a minor in agricultural economics.

Walton attended Wilton High School in Wilton, Iowa, and was a three-time All-American. He claimed the 200 IM and 100 back State Championships in 2014, as well as the 100 back in 2013.
