Ashley Mort came to SMU during the 2010-11 season and is responsible for coaching heptathlon.
In his time on the Hilltop (entering 2021-22), the Mustangs have captured three American Athletic Conference team championships (2014 Indoor, 2014 Outdoor, 2015 Outdoor) with SMU's coaching staff winning Coaching Staff of the Year each time. He has worked with SMU All-Americans Lucija Cvitanovic (javelin, heptathlon), Victoria Leks (high jump), Lisa Egarter (high jump), Isabella Marten (triple jump) and Nicole Iloanya (triple jump).
Olivia Dobson claimed the SMU pentathlon record under Mort’s guidance with a score of 4,040. He coached seven of the nine athletes on SMU’s top indoor performance list for the pentathlon, and four of the ten athletes on SMU’s top outdoor performance list for the heptathlon. This past season, he helped usher SMU into a new era — joining the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and hosting the first home meet in 27 years.
From 2003 to 2010, Mort coached the short sprinters and jumpers at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa. where members of his group accounted for over 15 conference championships spanning a variety of events (55m/100m/200m/long jump/triple jump/high jump), three conference records(55m/triple jump/high jump), and 2 All-Americans (55m/long jump).
Mort holds coaching certifications from USATF (level 3 jumps), the IAAF (level 5 combined events and sprints & hurdles), and USTFCCCA (combined events).
Mort received a bachelor's degree in computer science from Juniata College when he graduated in 2002 as the school record holder in the 55m and 200m events.
