Martin Puga, Jr.

    Volunteer Assistant Coach
Martin comes to SMU as a volunteer assistant sprints/hurdles/relays coach after spending time at both the collegiate and public school levels. From 2014 to 2016, Martin was a volunteer assistant sprints/hurdles/relays coach at Texas Tech University where he assisted in producing one 1st team All-American and Elite 89 Award winner, multiple 2nd team All-Americans and several Big XII conferences champions for the Red Raiders during his time. For the 2016-2017 academic year, Martin served at the middle school/high school level for Sherman Independent School District (Sherman, Texas) and was an assistant coach for football, basketball and track and field. 
 
As a collegiate athlete, Martin competed for West Texas A&M where he specialized in the 400/800 meters on the track and was also as a member of the cross country teams. He was an Academic All-Conference athlete for all four years and 4-time letter winner. In addition, he was a member of the back-to-back WTAMU Cross Country LoneStar Conference championship teams (2013 and 2014), an All-Conference Indoor award winner in 2013, and a member of the 2014 LoneStar Conference Indoor championship team. 
 
Martin completed his Bachelor's degree in 2014 from WTAMU where he majored in Sports & Exercise Sciences (Mathematics minor) and Master's degree in Kinesiology from TTU in 2016. He is a member of USATF as well as a certified Level I coach and is also certified by USTFCCCA in Technical Coaching. 
 
Martin is a graduate of Dimmitt High School (Dimmitt, Texas) and also works at a local gym as an assistant strength and conditioning coach in Dallas, Texas outside of assisting the Mustangs track and field program.
