Alex Gary was named Deputy Athletic Director / External Relations by Director of Athletics Damon Evans in May of 2025.Â
Gary joined the Mustangs after five years as Director of Athletics at Western Carolina. He works with the Mustang Club on prospect engagement and giving strategies for the department.
At WCU, he was a member of the university's Executive Council and oversaw the department of nearly 100 employees and 400 student-athletes. Gary increased the WCU athletics department budget by 15%, mainly through growth in gameday-related revenue from ticket and sponsorship sales.

Gary served on the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee and NCAA Baseball Rules Committee for three years (2022-25). Prior to WCU, Gary spent three years as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Development at Oregon State University. He also held various roles at Maryland, Michigan and Charlotte. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Virginia Commonwealth in 2005 and a master's degree in business administration, marketing, and management from UNC Charlotte in 2009.
