Alex Gary was named Deputy Athletic Director for External Relations by Director of Athletics Damon Evans in May 2025.

Gary leads the philanthropic revenue strategy for SMU Athletics, blending traditional fundraising with NIL-era and external partnership opportunities. He introduced the Boulevard Society, the university's first major-giving platform, with a $100 million effort dedicated to athletics priorities. In Gary's first full year overseeing fundraising, SMU Athletics reached $98.6 million in total fundraising production, the second-highest total in department history.

Gary joined the Mustangs after five years as Director of Athletics at Western Carolina University. There he led a department of 90 employees and 400 student-athletes and served on the university's Executive Council.

At WCU, Gary served on the university-wide Fill the Western Sky campaign steering committee and helped athletics land 37 commitments of $100,000 or more for facilities. The athletics program had received just seven gifts of that size in its entire prior history. He signed the two largest sponsorship agreements in WCU Athletics history, including naming rights for Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center. Gameday revenue grew 50 percent under his leadership, with three consecutive record-setting years in ticket sales.

In the classroom, Catamount student-athletes kept a cumulative GPA above 3.0 and averaged nearly 5,000 hours of community service each year. Gary also created WCU's first full-time student-athlete development position and launched WHEE CLIMB (Creating Leaders in the Mountains and Beyond), a program focused on leadership, personal growth, and career readiness.

Gary served on the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee and the NCAA Baseball Rules Committee from 2022 to 2025.

Before WCU, Gary spent three years as Senior Associate Athletics Director for Development at Oregon State University. There he led a $300 million athletics fundraising strategy within the university's $1.5 billion comprehensive campaign. He also held development roles at Maryland, Michigan, and Charlotte.

He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Virginia Commonwealth in 2005 and a master's degree in business administration, marketing, and management from UNC Charlotte in 2009.

Gary resides in Dallas with his wife Katie, and their three children Gianna, Myles, and Della Rose.
