Mustangs Fall at Hawaii, 30-15

Honolulu, Hawaii -- Hawaii freshman quarterback Timmy Chang passed for 314 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Warriors to their first win of the season, a 30-15 decision of SMU on Saturday night before 36,635 at Aloha Stadium. The Mustangs dropped their sixth straight game after a season-opening win over Kansas and dropped to 1-6.

"I am really proud of our guys effort," said SMU head coach Mike Cavan. "We fought until the end but there were a couple of plays during the course of the game that didn't go our way and they cost us the game."

The Mustangs fell behind 17-0 early in the second quarter but rallied to within 17-15 at the end of three periods but the Warriors scored 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

With a 17-15 on the first possession of the fourth quarter, Chang found Craig Stutzman for a 47-yard scoring pass with 12:42 to play. Brian Bischoff blocked the extra point to keep the margin at eight, 23-15.

SMU marched 51 yards in nine plays on its next possession but the drive stalled on the Hawaii 39-yard line. SMU appeared to have picked up a first down one play earlier when David Page hit Johnnie Freeman with a 14-yard pass to the Warrior 20 but the play was brought back due to an illegal formation penalty.

The Mustangs had two more cracks at tying the score but both possessions ended without a first down. On the first, SMU went three and out and on the second, Page was sacked and fumbled on the first play. Hawaii's Chris Brown returned the ball to the SMU one-yard line and Chang scored on the next play to seal the Warrior victory.

Page, making his first college start at quarterback, completed 15-of-24 passes for 130 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He did score the Mustangs' only touchdown on a one-yard run in the third period. Kris Briggs led SMU on the ground with 77 yards on 19 carries. Jacob Crowley hit all three of his field goal attempts for SMU.

SMU held a 39:16-20:44 time of possession edge but was outgained 364-271. The six-game losing streak is the program's longest since 10 straight to end the 1995 campaign.

The Mustangs take next weekend off before returning to Gerald J. Ford Stadium on Oct. 28 at 11:00 a.m. for Homecoming against Nevada.
