DALLAS, TEXAS -- Turnovers were again the downfall for the SMU football team on Saturday night, as rival TCU turned three Mustang turnovers into 21 points and handed the Ponies a 38-10 defeat before 24,122 at Gerald J. Ford Stadium to retain the Iron Skillet.
"There were a couple of key plays right before halftime that really swung the momentum," said SMU head coach Mike Cavan. "We have to play better on offense to give ourselves a chance to win."
The teams traded field goals in the first quarter -- a 40-yarder by the Horned Frogs' Nick Browne and a career-best 48-yarder by SMU's Jacob Crowley -- and the game seemed destined to go halftime with the score tied, but two quick TCU strikes made it 17-3 at the break and the Mustangs never recovered.
TCU found the endzone with 4:11 left in the half on a seven-yard run by Ricky Madison to take a 10-3 lead. On SMU's next possession, but Charlie Owens scooped up a John Hampton fumble and scampered 36 yards to give TCU a 14-point halftime edge.
"We have to protect the football to win," said Cavan. "This is the second straight game we've given up two touchdowns on turnovers. We can't do that and be successful."
TCU added three more TDs in the first seven minutes of the second half to put the game away. LaMarcus McDonald recovered a Kelan Luker fumble in the end zone on the second play after intermission to make it 24-3. LaTarence Dunbar
capped the Horned Frogs next possession with a two-yard scoring run. On SMU's next drive, Luker was intercepted by Owens, who returned the ball 21 yards to the Mustang one. On the next play, Andrew Hayes-Stoker dove over for a 38-3 lead.
SMU did manage to find the endzone for the first time in 2001 late in the fourth quarter, when backup quarterback David Page found Chris Cunningham on a two-yard pass with 2:21 to play.
SMU's offense managed just 148 total yards, including just 39 on 30 rushing attempts. The Mustang defense was solid, holding the Frogs to 290 total yards and forcing three turnovers.
