SMU Men's Basketball Team Begins Practice

The SMU Mustangs officially began the 1999-2000 season with their first men's basketball practice Saturday morning at Moody Coliseum. Thirteen of the 15 players on SMU's roster participated in the morning session, which began at 8:00 AM.
"It was a typical first practice," said SMU head coach Mike Dement. "There's a lot of room for improvement, but overall, I was pleased with the effort. I'm excited, our coaching staff is excited, and hopefully, our players are excited about the upcoming season. They have an opportunity to do some special things at SMU."
Sophomore center Nigel Smith and senior guard Tom Nabity missed the practice Saturday. Smith, a 6-10 Arlington native, will redshirt this season as he recovers from major sinus surgery. Nabity was interviewing for admission to medical school this weekend.
SMU, which finished 15-15 a year ago with one of the nation's youngest teams, returns 12 lettermen and all five starters from 1998-99, including the 1999 Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year Jeryl Sasser and senior floor leader Stephen Woods.
