SMU Defeats Global Sports 88-81

Willie Davis netted a game-best 24 points in leading SMU to an 88-81 victory over Global Sports in an exhibition game at Moody Coliseum Thursday night. The 6-6 junior was 10-of-17 from the field and also grabbed eight rebounds.
SMU survived a rough shooting night (.386) and held off a late Global Sports rally to earn its second consecutive exhibition game win. Global Sports tied the game at 78-78 on two Larry Thompson free throws with 3:36 remaining. SMU responded immediately with a 7-0 run (four points by DeWayne Floyd) over the next 2:26 to gain the advantage.
After Davis' 24 points, senior Stephen Woods was next for the Mustangs with 18. Quinton Ross (17), Damon Hancock (11) and Jeryl Sasser (10) also reached double figures. Sasser recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. For Global, Denmark Reid had a team-best 21 points (7-for-11 from three-point range).
Although they struggled from the field, the Mustangs were effective from the free throw line, connecting on 21 of 25 foul shots (.840). The Mustang defense forced 24 turnovers and three SMU players -- Davis, Sasser and Ross -- recorded three steals apiece.
SMU opens the 1999-2000 regular season on November 20 vs. Hardin-Simmons. Tip-off at Moody Coliseum is set for 7:35 PM Central time.
