Jeryl Sasser's Triple-Double Leads SMU Past Lamar

Behind junior guard Jeryl Sasser's first career triple-double, SMU defeated Lamar, 67-56, Tuesday night at Moody Coliseum. SMU improved to 2-0 overall, while Lamar falls to 1-1.
Sasser recorded the fourth triple-double in SMU history with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. The last Mustang to have a triple-double came from Gerald Lewis (13 points, 11 rebounds and 17 assists) vs. Texas at Moody Coliseum on March 6, 1993. 14 of Sasser's 16 points came in the second half.
SMU led by as many as 14 and went into the half ahead 30-21. That nine-point advantage was reduced to six in the first 3:28 of the second half, but the Mustangs answered with a 6-0 run over the next 58 seconds.
Junior guard/forward Willie Davis led SMU in scoring for the second consecutive game with 17 points. Sophomore guard Damon Hancock scored 11 points and senior guard Stephen Woods added five assists and three steals.
Lamar was led by Landon Rowe's 16 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Thaydeus Holden and Kenyon Spears added 16 and 10 points, respectively.
SMU is now 23-6 versus non-league opponents at home under head coach Mike Dement, and improved to 18-2 against teams from the Southland Conference.
SMU will next be in action when it travels to Houston on Nov. 27. Tip-off against the Cougars is set for 2:00 p.m.
