SMU Cruises to 90-68 Exhibition Win
Nov 5 | Men's Basketball
All-American candidate Jeryl Sasser scored a game-high 19 points in leading SMU to a 90-68 exhibition game victory over MBK Odessa Friday night at Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs shot 47.3 percent from the field and 45.0 percent from three-point range en route to the win.
"They made it difficult for us to run our offense tonight," said SMU head coach Mike Dement. "Our defense was the difference in creating some opportunities for us. We had good offensive balance and overall, I thought we played pretty well. I saw some nice things from our team."
Freshman guard Quinton Ross (14), junior forward Willie Davis (11) and sophomore guard Damon Hancock (10) each joined Sasser as double-figure scorers. Sophomore center Jon Forinash dominated the glass, registering a game-best 14 rebounds in 20 minutes of action.
SMU did not trail the entire game. After MBK Odessa pulled within three points at 14-11 with 14:21 remaining in the first half, SMU outscored MBK Odessa 37-23 the rest of the first frame to lead 51-34 at the intermission. The Mustangs led by as many as 25 points several times in the second half before capturing the 22-point win.
Yevgen Murzin and Vitali Ousenko each had 15 points for the visiting Ukraine team.
SMU returns to action on Thursday, November 11, against Global Sports. Tip-off at Moody Coliseum is set for 7:35 PM.
