SMU Tops Stony Brook, 72-55

The SMU men's basketball team defeated Stony Brook, 72-55, tonight at Moody Coliseum to improve its record to 7-1. The Mustangs are off to their best start since going 10-0 to start the 1997-98 season.
Three Mustangs scored in double figures against the Seawolves, led by Damon Hancock, who scored 17 points. Jeryl Sasser posted his sixth double double of the year and the 25th of his career with a 13 point-11rebound effort. The junior guard also dished out five assists. Willie Davis scored 14 points and had four steals for the Mustangs.
SMU dominated a sloppy first half and took a 38-16 lead into the locker room. The Mustangs shot just 39 percent from the field in the first half, but held Stony Brook to 26 percent from the floor.
Both teams improved their shot selection in the second half. The Mustangs, led by Sasser's eight second-half points, shot 50 percent from the field. But the scrappy Seawolves continued to fight. They shot 43 percent from the field after the intermission and outscored the Ponies, 39-34.
SMU remains undefeated at home this season and hosts Richmond Thurs., December 16, at 7:35 p.m. Stony Brook, competing in its first season of Division I competition, falls to 1-8 with the loss.
