Three SMU assistant football coaches have resigned their respective positions to pursue other opportunities, SMU head coach Mike Cavan announced Tuesday. Greg Briner, Paul Etheridge and David McKnight resigned from the Mustang coaching staff.
"I appreciate all that these coaches have done for the SMU football program," said Cavan. "I wish them all the best in the future."
Briner served as SMU's offensive coordinator the past two seasons. He came to SMU after previous coaching stops at Georgia, Marshall, Navy, the Indianapolis Colts, Oregon State, Portland State and Oregon.
Etheridge was hired at SMU after spending three years at Georgia as a graduate assistant/tight ends coach from 1994-96. He worked with the Mustang tight ends and offensive tackles since 1997.
McKnight, a veteran with 28 years of coaching experience, worked with the running backs and tight ends throughout his three-year tenure at SMU. The Fort Benning, Ga., native came to SMU from East Tennessee State along with Cavan in 1997.
