SMU Downs Richmond 78-77

The SMU men's basketball team defeated the Richmond Spiders, 78-77, in exciting fashion tonight at Moody Coliseum. SMU moves their record to 8-1 and maintains their perfect home record (5-0) this season.
The Mustangs battled for control of the lead in the last two minutes of play and trailed by two points with 4.7 seconds left on the clock. Junior Renaldo Bratton drove the ball up the court and launched a desperation 30-foot shot that hit its mark with no time remaining to give the Mustangs the win.
"We've been on the other end of that a bunch of times," said SMU head coach Mike Dement. "Tonight, it was our turn."
Three Mustangs scored in double figures against the Spiders. Junior Jeryl Sasser led all scorers with 20 points and seven rebounds. Junior Willie Davis was the only Mustang to post a double-double, scoring 18 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Senior Stephen Woods added 18 points and dished out a game-best seven assists.
The Mustangs struggled from the free throw line and trailed 40-43 at the half. SMU shot only 60 percent from the charity stripe all night, but limited Richmond to only five free throws attempts in the second half.
Richmond falls to 3-4 with the loss. SMU hosts Southeastern Louisiana at Moody Coliseum Saturday, Dec. 18, at 7:35 p.m.
