SMU Survives Chattanooga Scare

SMU (10-1) matched the best start in school history with its 67-66 overtime win at Chattanooga (1-7) on Monday night. The win was SMU's sixth in succession and 29th in its last 33 non-conference game.
"We were fortunate to win tonight," said SMU head coach Mike Dement. "We didn't get some calls we've been accustomed to getting and to their credit, Chattanooga really outworked us on the boards. It wasn't pretty, but it's a win over an opponent that has had great success at home. We'll need to be much better against Navy on Thursday."
SMU's Stephen Woods continued to bail his team out with a game-high 21 points on 8-of-19 shooting. Woods became SMU's all-time three-point leader after nailing five treys to improve his career total to 224. Previously, Troy Matthews held the record with 220 three-point field goals.
Jeryl Sasser had 16 points -12 in the second half and overtime - while Willie Davis added 13 points and a team-best 10 rebounds.
Chattanooga was led by Rashun Coleman's 13 points and David Phillips' 13 rebounds. The Mocs got to the foul line 26 times, compared to SMU's seven trips to the charity stripe. Chattanooga outrebounded SMU, 47-38.
Chattanooga, which opened the game on a 10-0 run, led at the half, 27-26. The Mocs led by as many as seven points in the second half before SMU battled back to take a 59-57 lead after a Woods' three-pointer with 30 seconds remaining. Oliver Morton sent the game into overtime on a leaner with nine seconds left.
In overtime, Chattanooga went on a 5-2 run the first two minutes before SMU closed the contest with a 6-2 run of its own. SMU's Kimball HS connection of Sasser and Quinton Ross combined for six of the Ponies' eight points in overtime.
SMU faces Navy on Thursday, December 23, at Moody Coliseum in its next game. The Mustangs will be looking for their seventh straight victory.
