SMU Defeats Navy, 87-78, for Seventh Consecutive Win

Behind three players with 20 or more points, the SMU Mustangs (11-1) defeated Navy (5-4), 87-78, at Moody Coliseum Thursday night. The Mustangs won their seventh consecutive game and earned the 1,000th all-time victory in school history.
SMU senior guard Stephen Woods led all scorers with 27 points on 6-of-7 shooting from three-point range, while his teammates Willie Davis and Jeryl Sasser each added 21. Davis also grabbed a career-best 17 rebounds for his sixth double-double of 1999-2000.
"I thought we looked a little tired," said SMU head coach Mike Dement. "But, that's to be expected when you're playing your fourth game in eight days. This was a good win for us against a team that had 17 days to prepare for the game. I really like their team, but I like our team as well. I'm proud of our players for starting this season with an 11-1 record."
Navy grabbed a 29-28 lead with 4:57 remaining in the first half, but SMU answered with a Quinton Ross jump shot to regain the lead with 4:06 left. From that point on, SMU never trailed again and led by as many as 11 points in the second half before securing the nine-point win, its first in three tries vs. Navy.
SMU limited Navy to .395 shooting. It was the 15th consecutive game that SMU has held an opponent to less than 50 percent shooting from the field. In addition, SMU improved to 29-5 under Dement when scoring 80 or more points.
Sitapha Savane's 26 points and 13 rebounds led Navy.
SMU returns to action on December 31 in New Orleans against a much-improved Tulane (8-1) team. SMU's next game at Moody Coliseum is on January 2 vs. New Mexico State.
