SMU Rolls Past Maryland-Eastern Shore 93-55

The SMU men's basketball team advanced to the championship game of the Pizza Hut Classic with a 93-55 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore Friday night on the campus of Southwest Missouri State. The Mustangs will face Western Illinois or the host Bears Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
SMU spotted the Fighting Hawks a 12-0 lead to start the game but responded with a 10-0 run of its own then outscored the Fighting Hawks 33-15 to take a 43-27 halftime lead. The Ponies took their first lead at 16-14 on a jumper from sophomore guard Damon Hancock and never trailed again.
"We gained a lot of confidence coming back to win the way we did," Head Coach Mike Dement said. "We held them to just 42 points the rest of the game after calling timeout down 12-0."
The victory was SMU's largest since beating Hardin-Simmons 110-69 in the 1999-2000 season opener.
"They have scored a lot of points this year and we knew they could score quickly," Dement said. "I think they got tight once we came back, and we were able to take advantage of that with some key shots and good defense."
Five players scored in double figures for SMU with junior forward Willie Davis leading the way with 21 on 8-of-11 shooting. Senior guard Stephen Woods followed his 24-point performance at Missouri with 19 on 7-of-10 shooting. Sophomore forward DeWayne Floyd grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and added seven points.
Senior guard Jeryl Sasser's 11 points moved him into 21st on the SMU career scoring list with 1,078 points - surpassing Steve Strange's 1,077 points scored from 1958-61.
The Mustangs conclude their road trip tomorrow night and return home to Moody Coliseum Dec. 11 to host Stony Brook.
