Preseason Praise High for Men's Basketball Team

The SMU men's basketball team, with five returning starters and 13 returning lettermen, has received solid recognition in two of the annual basketball preview magazines.
The Basketball News ranks SMU 54th in the nation and predicts the squad will place second in the Western Athletic Conference this season. Junior guard Jeryl Sasser, the 1999 WAC Mountain Division Player of the Year, was named as the sixth-best three-guard in the country, a top 100 national player, the WAC Player of the Year and a first team all-conference selection by The Basketball News. The News also placed senior guard Stephen Woods on its preseason All-WAC second team.
SMU also received praise from Athlon. The magazine has SMU slated to make the National Invitation Tournament this season and finish third in the WAC. Sasser was named to the publication's five-man All-WAC team.
