SMU (0-3, 0-1 WAC) dropped a 20-0 decision to Hawaii (3-1, 1-0 WAC) in the Cotton Bowl Saturday afternoon. The Hawaii win snapped a 24-game WAC road losing streak for the Rainbow Warriors.

"We turned the football over and had a lot of penalties - something we've done all year and have continued to do," said SMU third-year coach Mike Cavan. "We can't make those kinds of mistakes and expect to beat anyone."

Hawaii, a run-and-shoot team, benefited from the big passing play all afternoon. The Rainbow Warriors' longest scoring drive was 3:36 and three of their scores took less than two minutes. Hawaii starting quarterback Dan Robinson was 23-of-39 for 304 yards with three interceptions and two touchdowns. UH receiver Dwight Carter had 10 catches for 127 yards in the game. Hawaii outgained SMU, 394-231.

The Mustangs went back to a ground-based offensive attack that netted 81 rushing yards on 47 carries. True freshman Kris Briggs continued to impress, gaining a game-high 76 yards on 18 carries. True freshman QB Kelan Luker played a majority of the game, going 11-of-27 for 107 yards and one interception.

"I felt like I wanted to give him a chance," said Cavan of Luker. "He played pretty well for us. We need to give him an opportunity to do some things."

Defensively, Jason Simonton led SMU tacklers with 11 stops according to press box statistics. Senior safety Raymon Brown had two interceptions, marking the second time in his career he has had a multiple interception game.

Fielding one of its youngest teams, five more SMU players made their first career starts Saturday: LG Danny Murphy, DT Warrie Birdwell, LB Justin Williams, DB James Orr and DB Courtney Richardson.

After an 0-2 start, SMU tried to give itself a new look by wearing blue uniforms for the first time since Sept. 20, 1997 when the Mustangs wore blue vs. Navy at the Cotton Bowl.
