Nigel Smith Likely to Miss 1999-2000

SMU sophomore center Nigel Smith, a starter in 17 games last year, will likely miss the 1999-2000 season, Mustang head coach Mike Dement announced Monday.
Smith underwent major nasal surgery during the summer and was scheduled to undergo more surgery on Thursday, September 30. Dement indicated that Smith will redshirt during the 1999-2000 season.
"Nigel has done all the right things since his surgery this summer," said Dement. "Unfortunately, his doctors found an infection that needs to be corrected. We will most likely redshirt Nigel this season to allow him to recover properly from his surgery. He can come back strong to help us in 2000-2001."
