Men's Basketball Ends Pre-Season Schedule

The SMU men's basketball team ended its pre-season schedule Saturday night, as the Mustangs fell to the Athletes First team 98-81 at Moody Coliseum without the aid of senior standout guard Jeryl Sasser.
SMU was led by Quinton Ross who led the Mustangs for the second straight game with 25 points on eight of 13 shooting. The Athletes First team was led by Chad Wilkerson, who poured in 26 points including five three-point field goals.
The Mustangs got off to quick start, leading 23-13 after 12 minutes of play, but the Athletes First team quickly cut the lead to five after a three-pointer by Wilkerson at the 6:39 mark. The Mustangs led for the last time in the first half when Mike Niemi put them ahead 34-33 with a two point bucket. Athletes First went on a 5-0 run and never trailed again.
SMU opened the second half with a charge as two Ross three-pointers and a Willie Davis lay in, put the Mustangs ahead 47-46 early on, but the Athletes First team roared back and led for good after a Devin Baker dunk put them ahead 57-56.
Davis and Damon Hancock each had 16 for the Mustangs, while former SMU great Stephen Woods scored 11 points as a member of the Athletes First team in his return to Moody Coliseum.
The Mustangs tip off their regular season November 25 as they travel to Beamont, Texas to take on Lamar. The Mustangs return to Moody Coliseum December 2 against Tulane. For tickets call 214-SMU-GAME.
