SMU Men's Hoops Beats Lamar, 92-70

Senior G Willie Davis scored 27 points and was one of three players to score 20 or more points as SMU rolled in the second half to a 92-70 victory over Lamar in the 2000-01 season opener in Beaumont, Texas, Saturday night.
Senior G Jeryl Sasser and junior G Damon Hancock scored 24 and 23 points respectively for the Mustangs (1-0), who outscored the Cardinals (1-1) 54-32 in the second half behind a relentless defense.
"Our defense during the last 10 minutes of the ball game was the best we have played here at SMU in the last few years," sixth-year head coach Mike Dement said. "We finally found a way to disrupt Joey Ray (22 points on 4-of-6 three-point shooting) and got some rebounds which led to fast break opportunities."
The game was dead even 38-38 at the half as the two teams battled among nine lead changes and seven ties. SMU and Lamar each held a five-point lead once during the opening frame - Lamar's coming at 7-2 just 2:45 into the contest. SMU erased the five-point deficit with a 14-4 run over the next 7:33 to take a 16-11 lead.
The Cardinals scored first in the second half and held a 42-40 with 18:05 remaining before Davis tied the score with a lay-up nine seconds later. Hancock's jumper at the 17:02 mark gave SMU the lead for good as the defense tightened down, allowing the lead to balloon to 10 points with 6:24 remaining - it was as close as Lamar would get.
Junior F DeWayne Floyd, playing in front of his hometown crowd, grabbed a team- and game-high 10 rebounds for SMU. Sasser pulled in eight along with five assists, and Davis added seven boards, two assists and two blocks.
SMU will conclude its two-game road trip to start the 2000-01 season in Las Cruces, N.M., Wednesday when the Ponies take on the Aggies of New Mexico State at 8:00 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast back to Dallas on KSTR-49 - Brian Jensen and Ira Terrell will have the call. The Mustangs host Tulane in their home opener Saturday, December 2 at 2:00 p.m.
