SMU Routs Tulane, 87-58

Dallas, Texas -- Junior guard Damon Hancock scored 20 points to lead four SMU players in double figures as the Mustangs ripped Tulane 87-58 on Saturday afternoon in their home opener at Moody Coliseum.
"We got out quickly and I think we might have stunned them a bit," said SMU head coach Mike Dement. "Damon was excellent today. He created a lot of things for us. It was a very good win."
After allowing the first basket of the game, SMU went on a 20-5 tear to take a 13-point lead with nine minutes remaining in the opening half. Hancock then score eight points as the Mustangs closed the period with a 20-3 run to take a 44-18 advantage into the locker room.
SMU held the Green Wave to 19.4 percent shooting in the first half (7-of-36) and 26.9 percent for the game (18-of-67).
"The defense we played, especially in the first half, was the best we have played since I have been here," Hancock said.
The Mustangs led by as many as 31 in the second half and never saw their advantage shrink below 21 points in running its record to 3-0.
Sophomore Quinton Ross added 18 points for SMU while senior Jeryl Sasser added 11 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Freshman Lavardicus Atkins chipped in with 10 points off the bench.
SMU shot 50.8 percent from the field (33-of-65) and outrebounded Tulane 54-44.
The Mustangs begin a busy week on Monday when they host Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Moody at 7:35 p.m. They travel to No. 7 Tennessee on Thursday and visit Navy next Saturday.
