Mustangs Rout Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 90-50
Dec 4 | Men's Basketball
Dallas, Texas -- Damon Hancock led five SMU players in double figures with 18 points as the Mustangs routed Arkansas-Pine Bluff 90-50 on Monday night in Moody Coliseum before 2,357 for their fourth straight win to start the season.
Hancock had his streak of three straight games of 20 or more points snapped but led SMU in scoring for the third straight game. He also added a career-high tying seven assists and four rebounds.
"Damon was a big factor once again tonight," said Mustang head coach Mike Dement. "He is playing with a lot of confidence right now.
"Our big guys were active tonight. Jibran Kelley attacked the basket and made some free throws and DeWayne Floyd played very well."
The Mustangs led by 18 at intermission, 39-21, then went on a 19-2 run early in the second half to go up 58-25. Kelley keyed the run with seven of his career-high 14 points during the spurt. Arkansas-Pine Bluff never got closer than 31 after that.
"It was good to get everybody in the game," said Dement, who played all 12 Mustangs that dressed. "We are still trying to figure out our rotation though because we have had different guys sitting out each night with different injuries."
SMU preseason All-American Jeryl Sasser sat out the contest while nursing a sore hand.
Two Mustangs posted double-doubles: Willie Davis with 16 points and 10 rebounds and DeWayne Floyd with 14 points and 10 boards. Freshman Kris Lowe added a season-high 10 points off the bench.
SMU shot 55.0 percent from the field (33-of-60) while holding the Golden Lions to 30.8 percent shooting (20-of-65). The Mustangs also outrebounded Arkansas-Pine Bluff 52-33.
Sasser will be available on Thursday when the Mustangs travel to seventh-ranked Tennessee. Tip-off for that game is set for 6:00 p.m. CT and the contest will be broadcast in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on KSTR-TV.
