The SMU women's basketball team extended its school record-winning streak to 10 games this evening as it defeated Tulsa, 73-66, at Moody Coliseum.
The Mustangs started off fast, hitting nine of their first 11 shots and opening a 36-22 halftime lead. But the Golden Hurricane answered with a hot streak of its own, shooting 60.7 percent from the field in the second half to give SMU a scare.
"We got by that one," Mustang head coach Rhonda Rompola said. "We knew it would be a tough game. Tulsa is a good team and they are playing with a lot of confidence right now. We survived that one."
The Mustangs survived with a team effort. Five players scored in double figures for the Mustangs, led by D-dra Rucker's 16 points. Three SMU players posted double-doubles. Rucker had 10 assists to go with her team-high points total. Karlin Kennedy totaled 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Nici Johnson tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds.
But it was not easy for the Mustangs, who remain atop the Western Athletic Conference standings with a 6-0 conference mark and 13-5 overall record. Tulsa guard Kasie Pittman scored 21 points and hit a three-point basket that pulled the Golden Hurricane to within five with 4:13 remaining. Tulsa shot 62.5 percent from three-point range in the second half and 46 percent from behind the arc in the game. Lila Osceola scored 16 points and Denise Wagner scored 14 for the Hurricane in a losing effort. Tulsa, which entered the game tied for second in the WAC fell to 5-2 in the conference and 9-10 overall.
SMU concludes its three-game home stand Saturday against Rice at 2:00 p.m.
